2024 Safety Vessel Inspections
October 14, 15, 28 & 29 2023, from 0900 to 1400
Report to the Saunders Lounge to meet with a vessel inspector
Ahoy, NYC vessel owners and enthusiasts! As we embark on another year of maritime adventures, it’s crucial to keep safety at the forefront of our minds. We’re thrilled to announce that the annual vessel inspection season is upon us, a time to ensure the safety and security of all vessels moored within our vibrant waters.
Annual Inspection: Your Vessel’s Lifeline
Safety is paramount within the boat bassin, and that’s why all vessels moored at NYC, including sublet vessels, are required to undergo a safety inspection each year. This inspection is designed to guarantee that our vessels meet the standards outlined in the Safety Inspection Guidebook and adhere to the best practices that keep both crews and vessels safe.
The goal? Achieving the coveted 2024 safety decal that signifies your vessel’s commitment to safety and preparedness. The inspection isn’t just a formality; it’s an opportunity to identify and rectify deficiencies swiftly, contributing to a safer club community for all.
2024 Focus: Fire Prevention & Lithium-Based Electricity Storage
This year, our inspection efforts are honing in on a crucial safety aspect: fire prevention related to Lithium-Based Electricity Storage installations. We encourage all members to familiarize themselves with the annex to Kris Charmely’s insightful report, which sheds light on this issue. While immediate corrective action may be necessary for installations posing an elevated risk, all members are granted a one-year window to address identified deficiencies.
Common Deficiency Alert: Fire Extinguisher Service Life
One recurring area of concern is the service life of fire extinguishers. It’s essential to verify the service tag or manufacturing date of your fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers should be serviced every 6 years, and a hydrostatic test must be carried out according to the instructions on the cylinder. To facilitate this process, we’re offering discounted rates for NYC members who wish to drop off their fire extinguishers for servicing and inspection at our office.
Fire Extinguisher Service Rates:
Annual Inspection: $8 (optional for pleasure boating)
- Visual inspection
- Weighting
- Nozzle inspection and cleanup
- Re-tagged
Mandatory 6-Year Service: $20
- All items from the annual inspection
- Recharge
- Replacement or servicing of all parts and seals
For the hydrostatic test at the 12-year mark, we recommend engaging with local fire prevention specialists who offer an exchange program for well-maintained fire extinguishers.
Safety Is Visibility: Install Your Extinguisher Conspicuously
Fire extinguishers must be prominently installed and easily accessible. If placed within a cabinet or lazarette, don’t forget to add a clear sign indicating their location. Safety is optimized when everyone can swiftly locate and utilize vital equipment.
Inspection Preparation: Liability Insurance and Scheduling
In preparation for inspection, please ensure you’ve submitted a current copy of your liability insurance to our office. As vessel owners, the responsibility lies with us to ensure our vessels are inspected, maintained, and safe. If attendance during the designated inspection days isn’t feasible, you can schedule an inspection with Rusty at our office. A $25 service fee will be applied for special inspections.
